The acclaimed Studio Ghibli film "My Neighbor Totoro" remains popular across all ages with its endearing characters and heartwarming story. A giant sugi tree in the Kosugi district of Sagigawa Village attracted attention for its resemblance to Totoro. Known locally as the Great Sugi of Kosugi or Twin Sugi, it later became famous as the "Totoro Tree" and is now a tourist attraction. The village's public relations officer was perplexed by its fame, wondering if they could freely use the name "Totoro." After deliberation, they called Studio Ghibli to confirm. There was concern about massive trademark fees. Ghibli's response was heartwarming: "We are delighted that people call it with such affection." The PR officer was encouraged and impressed by Ghibli's magnanimity. Originally there were two trees, so it was called the Twin Sugi and was a local shrine deity.
